The Apple Mail app gives you access to any existing e-mail accounts that you want to add, without downloading anything.

Eg: If you have Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook etc., you can add them all to Apple Mail, and gain access to all of them.


Apple support have an article online to help:

Set up mail, contacts, and calendar accounts on iPhone

(You can choose your iPhone's iOS number at the top of the article, for the most accurate info.)
