Transferring file from my old MacBook to my new MacBook Air

I have just got a new MacBook Air and want to transfer all of the files over from my old MacBook which has 2 accounts on it.

I have tried using the Migration Assistant but that is forcing me to transfer over the user profiles as well which I don't want to do. It also wants to transfer over some library files which I am unable to untick.

I have Time Machine backups as well.

What is the best way for me to transfer files across without all of the User overhead.

Copy the files you want to a portable drive attached to the old Mac, attach drive to new Mac and copy and paste the files to the new Mac.

It's inadvisable to copy and paste from TimeMachine.
