What is the best way to connect an extra monitor to my 2013 iMAC ?

The 2013 iMac has two Thunder Bolt ports that support Mini DisplayPort adapters for display output.

So what you need, is a Mini DisplayPort to DVI, VGA or HDMI adapter, depending on what input the external monitor supports.
