I have a 2008 intel iMac that I need to a fresh install of an os for a hd that use to run in a windows comp based system how do I set up that hd to run a fresh install of OS X and which installer should I use
OS X Server (Mavericks)
a) Buy a Snow Leopard upgrade DVD (one of the white ones, not a grey original install disk. The grey ones are locked to the specific models they shipped with).
b) Have a friend with a 2007-2014 Mac burn a USB installer for you (Yosemite or El Capitan).

If you need an OS newer than 10.11 you will need a newer Mac.
