iPad as desktop

my parents desktop computer is on its way out - they own an iPad but I wondered what we could purchase to convert it to a laptop style item ie. best keyboard, can I put office programs on it etc

You can buy Bluetooth keyboards and get Microsoft Office or Apple iWork on it. It can function as a computer, but it isn’t a perfect replacement as iPads don’t have full mouse support and have a smaller screen.
