Hi Netter61,

Factory resetting your MacBook Air or MacBook Pro won't help in regards to your Apple ID or Apple ID password. To reset your Apple ID password, please visit Apple's password reset site: https://iforgot.apple.com

If your Mac has the T2 Security Chip or uses an Apple silicon processor (M1 family or future processors), Activation Lock may be enabled, in which case you can't use the Mac after you erase it, unless you provide your Apple ID and password. This is primarily in place to deter thieves.

Erasing a Mac alone does not require an Apple ID or password.
