Is this a personal device You're using? Has it recently been disabled or are you using Touch ID? There are times that you could be prompted to change your passcode using Touch ID. Check this out: Use a passcode with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. You've mentioned that you were prompted to update the password on your iPhone when updating your device. This shouldn't happen with an update. Are you being told to change the passcode or your Apple ID password?

If you have a corporate email account set up on your phone, the administrators can enforce policies, including required passcode changes.
