Getting rid of background apps

How in the world do you get rid of the apps you’ve been accessing. Swiping up from right hand corner doesn’t work worth anything. Ex. Using Waze, done using Waze want to get rid of active using takes forever swiping up from right Isn’t there an easier way

You'll need to open the app switcher and swipe up on the app you want to close from there. Instructions with visual examples can be found here:
