can I migrate selected files from an old to new mac instead of everything

One other option is to use Target Disk Mode ( Transfer files between two Mac computers using target disk mode - Apple Support ) however I'd clean up the old computer first, backup using Time Machine and then follow the steps in Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant
