In the trial version of FCP the plug-ins do deal with green background is not there.
In Imovie it is there but it is quite limited you cannot fade in and out to the clip with the green background
If I buy FCP X I want to be sure I can do it

At the extreme right of your screen, just above the timeline, are the two buttons for Effects and for Transitions.
I would post a screenshot but I am not at my mac. Anyway, I think you will find them easily, now.

Can you post a screenshot of what you see in the Effects browser?
The Final Cut Pro Trial has the Keyer effect.
In a recent thread with the same question, the OP was looking for it under Transitions instead of Effects.
Maybe that is your issue as well.
