I get an error message that I need to updat iTunes, but Check says current

I am trying to update software on my iPhone. I have always done that before by plugging into my PC and connecting to iTunes. This time. it backed up the phone normally, then said new software was available. When I clicked the option to download and update, I got an error message that iTunes needed to be updated first. But Check Updates says I have the current version.

It sounds like you are still running Windows 7 or 8, and you cannot update iTunes because the latest versions require Windows 10 or 11.
