My phone was beside my laptop but it was invisible for uploading photos from the phone using Airdrop.. I was signed in on both devices. It turns out the photos appeared in Photos anyway but I am puzzled why I saw the "no one nearby" message.

If the display is off, then you lose the connection.

Neither display was off. This appears to be a new glitch.
