An iPad Air 1st generation cannot support iOS versions past 12.5.5, because of hardware (CPU/RAM) incompatibility.

don't bother turn that pad into a camera monitor or open it up and use the back as a plate
So it is planned by Apple to make you replace devices - I'm old so guess I will try to buy new one but supply shortages
