You can do this only if the Mac mini you buy is a 2012, 2014 or 2018 model running macOS Catalina or earlier.

AND only if that 2013 iMac is running macOS High Sierra or earlier.

  • AND the cabling required to connect the two Macs must be a Thunderbolt  or Thunderbolt 2  cable.


Apple deprecated target display mode a few years ago. It is no longer supported, neither in hardware nor software.

Your best option is to simply buy an inexpensive monitor dedicated to your new Mac mini.
