My desktop iMac with High Sierra version 10.13.6.. the year is 2016 but the computer is wonderful except for this; some websites tell me to upgrade but I am not able to do it.! it won't do it. So, Is this the end of the road for this computer?

If this is an 8 GB model with a hard disk drive, I’d tend to try Mojave first, as newer macOS releases tend to exceed what the bottom-end iMac models can do. If this isn’t the bottom-end iMac and has (for instance) 16 GB and an SSD, then it’ll do fine with Monterey.
Try a different browser 1st of al my friend...
