how to free up disk space

how do I free up disk space? I have an external disk drive but I still do not have enough disk space for an update...what am I missing?

Chances are that you need to move more files from the external disk drive you are using to another external drive which is dedicated to storage. Then you can remove the files from the startup drive. In the alternative, you might replace the current external drive with a larger capacity drive. I think that is what I would do. If so, be sure to get a SSD drive. They are like 30% faster.
