Why does Pages automatically duplicate a file while typing instead of auto saving it?

Why does Pages automatically duplicate a file while I’m typing instead of auto saving? While I’m typing in a brand new file starting from a blank page, all of a sudden I am interrupted and I receive a pop up that says that the file I’m working on is out of synch with another file that it created without my knowledge or permission and it asks which one I want to keep. So I keep both. My files are small. So it’s not a big deal. But the pop up is annoying. Has anyone had this problem? It’s been going on with me for probably 10 years. If there is a solution to this please let me know. I’m using the latest version of iOS Pages and iPad OS Pages app and iCloud storage. So this could either be a Pages or iCloud bug. I have no idea. I’ve never been able to figure it out. So I’m just reporting it. I can live with this minor bug. Thanks.
