Indoor treadmill walk is inaccurate

How can I get my Apple Watch 2 to accurately measure my steps? I have been using my treadmill during winter after back surgery. Walking is critical to my recovery, but I cannot let go of the bars to let my arm swing. My distance is never the same as the treadmill. Is there no way to improve this accuracy?
