Deleted messages

I deleted some old messages but now need them back. I haven't backed up my phone but still need them. Is there a way to get them back?

If you use messages in iCloud, deleted messages are irrecoverable.

If you do not, you can erase your device and restore it using a backup that contains the message, albeit at the expense of anything new since the backup was made.
