Monterey and Big Sur: can't move files to trash, only delete immediately

I have an MBP 14" on Monterey and a MBA 2020 on Big Sur. I can no longer send files I want to delete to trash but get message that they will be deleted immediately without any possibility of recovering them. Is this a bug, or something that I need to change in a setting? If the latter, how do I do this? Thanks

MacBook Pro (2020 and later)

If this happens locally on the Mac and not network shares, delete your home Trash folder. It will be created with correct permissions.

Open your home folder and show hidden files with this shortcut, cmd-shift-.

Delete the .Trash folder.

Toggle hidden files with same shortcut.
