To reset encrypted data do you lose any information

If I reset encrypted data do I lose information? We have forgotten the password for an old iPad and it suggests resetting the encrypted data.

What suggests resetting encrypted data?

”Encrypted data” … where?

If you’re talking about an encrypted backup on a Mac or in iTunes, for example, it cannot simply be “reset”. You can attempt to reset the encryption passcode, but that would apply to future backups and then you can never access the old backup.
