Cant Update software - “storage system verify or repair failed”. : (-69716)

Im trying to Update my MacBook Air early 2015, from High Sierra to Monterey. ( I know- a big jump but I haven’t used my Mac for a while )

When it starts to download after about 10 minutes I get an error saying

“storage system verify or repair failed”. : (-69716)

and leaves me no choice but to restart the computer and cancel the update.

I have tried doing the safeboot and disk first aid, and it said there was no issues.

I’ve been searching the internet and I’ve found no easy fix, the only solution is to make a safe copy, put it on a external drive, wipe the computer and do a clean download and then put the copy back. That will take a really long time, and I’m on limited resources and know nothing about computers so I’m worried I’ll do it wrong and loose all my things. I also don’t have a external disk to put it on, or the money for one right now. Please help me out!!

Skipping over all the in-between UpGrades is risky as is being experienced on this computer now. Technically it can be done but not always.

One may consider moving up to something less new like at least Mojave 10.14 or even Catalina 10.15 and making sure either are Full Up-to-Date with all additional updates and Security updates.

Have seen others jumping from older versions which were not Fully Up-to-Date and experiencing less than positive upgrades to Big Sur and / or Monterey.

Even if First Aid says everything is "Ok" click "Show Details" and scroll back through the report to see if any unfixed errors are listed. First Aid will lie to users about the true condition of the file system (I've personally experienced this with some of our organization's Macs -- shame on Apple for this behavior). If you run First Aid from Recovery Mode or a USB installer and there are unfixed errors listed, then you will need to erase the whole physical drive and restore from a backup or clone.

Edit: Also check to see if what the "SMART status" is for the drive within Disk Utility. If it has "SMART Status Failed", then Monterey will refuse to install. Also if the laptop is using a third party SSD, the Monterey installer will refuse to install until the system firmware has been updated by the Monterey installer which requires an internal Apple SSD.
