how to remove (and stop syncing) photos from iPhone with Mac?

How can I remove phots from my Mac which are taking up a lot of storage? 50gb in total.

I don't need this feature and it's only annoying.

I tried to uncheck Photos from System Preferences > iCloud > applications using iCloud, but I was not asked if I want to delete photos locally as it was suggested on other sites.

It's fine with me if that just stay on iPhone and iCloud.
