macbook pro often incorrectly detects which displays are connected

I have a new macbook pro connected thru a caldigit doc to two hi-res LG displays. frequently when i wake mac up it doesn't correctly recognize what monitors it is connected to. sometimes only one, usually at low resolution, sometimes two but it thinks they are side by side even though i have configured them as vertical. havent ben able to figure out how to force mac to re-detect displays. i read that holding the option key with the displays preferences wiindo open would unhide a button to do this but that must be for older versions of the OS

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15
