From a recent personal experience:

  • Power-off the notebook. Disconnect it from power.
  • Using paper towels, wipe up as much liquid as you can.
  • Leave the display open to allow it air dry.
  • Do NOT use any type of desiccant, like rice to try drying it. They DO NOT work and only can contribute to more potential damage by introducing additional debris into any of the notebook's openings.
  • Make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. Alternatively, contact Apple Support directly and arrange to have the notebook shipped to them.

As you were informed, Apple does not cover liquid damage under their standard warranty. However, if you elected to get an AppleCare+ plan with your notebook, any repair costs will be significantly reduced. FWIW, In my case a small spill required the replacement of the display, logic board, and touch pad.

Liquid damage to Mac computers and accessories not covered by warranty ⚠️

Damage to Mac computers and accessories due to liquid exposure is not covered by the Apple One (1) Year Limited Warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP). AppleCare+ for Mac adds up to two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months, each subject to a service fee plus applicable tax. Exclusions apply, please see AppleCare+ for Mac Terms and Conditions for details.

Current Mac notebook computers and some Apple wired and wireless keyboards have Liquid Contact Indicators (LCI) to help determine if these products have been exposed to liquid.

Benefits under the manufacturer's warranty are in addition to rights provided by consumer law. You can learn more at Apple Products and Consumer Law Rights.

If you have questions, contact Apple for help with your desktop computernotebook computer, or accessories.
