Reinstalling Mac OS after erasing

I have late 2009 iMac running on El Capitan. I plan to either give it away or take it to Apple for recycling. After I erase it: when it reinstalls macOS, will it know to install El Capitan (which i believe is the latest OS this old machine will run)?

What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac

When reinstalling OS X - it should install the version associated with the Recovery Volume on the Internal Drive.
