email infection

I tried to stop a spam email by writing an email, copying and pasting an email address in their email, to get them to stop sending me further emails. However that put my mail application into a loop - whenever I try to darft an email, the screen repeatedly flash the same draft email screen, but not allowing me to type anything. Only way to exit is via Force Quit Mail app.

How can I clean this up?

With Apple Mail Closed - Hold the Control key and launch Apple Mail and sub menu appears and choose Open.
