My imac display screen died, how do i connect to another monitor so i can turn it on and use it?

recently my 10 yr old imac screen died but the computer is working fine as per the technician who troubleshoot the issue. How do i connect my imac to another monitor so i can use the display to use my imac and probably backup my hard drive?

iMac 27″, macOS 10.13

iMac 27” Late 2012 (that’s a guess at the model, YMMV) supports Thunderbolt graphics output.

Connect an external display to your iMac - Apple Support

If your external display isn't detected or appears blurry on your Mac - Apple Support


Or use Target Disk Mode to get the backup.

Transfer files between two Mac computers using target disk mode - Apple Support


Or extract the disk and insert it into a USB disk sled, and use that from a replacement Mac.
