Update MacBook Pro

Trying to update and upgrade my wife's 2016 MacBook Pro from High Sierra to Monterey. We have never installed an update to High Sierra. Will installing Monterey update everything including updates that we did not timely install on High Sierra?

How do I know if the computer has been backed up on icloud?

It's two operations:

1) Back up all your files to a local external drive. It is NOT optional because:

2) Install Monterey. This changes the way your boot disk is organized, and if it has any trouble, all of your files could be lost.

As long as you were running 10.11 El Capitan (fully updated) or later, this will a completely new MacOS, and does not depend on your previous installation. at 10.15 and later no older 32-bit Applications are supported, and they can not be forced to run.
