I migrated an older IPhotos library from my desktop to Photos yesterday. Instead of adding these photos, my personal Photos library seems to have been replaced. I can see the original library photos on iCloud but can't find them on my Mac. Where did I go wrong?

When you open a new library in photos, that is the one that will continue to open, until you change it.
Close photos, then hold down the option key while restarting it. You will be offered a list of libraries to open. The one marked system library will be the one that matches iCloud.
