How can I get past activation lock

The device was given to me but the person is no longer around. They didnt remove their apple stuff before resetting it and now I cant get into it. Is there any way I can get around this?

If you have the original purchase receipt, contact Apple Support and ask them to disable the Activation Lock.

Follow the steps on this Apple page to do that:

Additional Support - Activation Lock

If you can't prove your ownership, Apple can't disable the Activation Lock.
