Phil -- that has changed recently. The 50GB plan is now also shareable. See the following from Share iCloud+ with your family - Apple Support

With Family Sharing, you can share a subscription to iCloud+ with everyone in your family group. This includes 50GB, 200GB, or 2TB of iCloud storage as well as features like iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, and HomeKit Secure Video support

200GB or 2TB plans are required for sharing. The 50GB plan cannot be shared. 

All members share the same 200GB or 2TB.  They don't each get 200GB or 2TB.

But the the amount is shared among all users. They don't each get the purchases / rented storage amount.
