My 2 iMacs (macOS Catalina; Version 10.15.7) do not show a choice of "Play sound on startup" on the Sound Effects menu. On one iMac the opening crash chime sound is turned off.

On the iMac with no start up chime, run this command in the Terminal…

sudo nvram StartupMute=%00


If that doesn't work for some reason, reset NVRAM.
