Change Finder - Desktop - window colors?

I hate the washed out colors of the Finder and application windows in Monterey OS 12 on my MacBook Pro 2019. From all the online reading I have done, there does not seem to be a way to change them. Am I wrong?

I am not going to use "dark mode."

The "increase contrast" option makes the screen even more unreadable.

I have calibrated my display five times in different ways.

"Display contrast" seems to wash out the windows even more, contrary to the name of the control.

I was very happy with the look of Catalina, but I obviously cannot keep using an aging OS.
