Hello deb323,

Does this happen after restarting? If you're unsure, go ahead and perform a normal restart on your Mac to help refresh the system. If the issue/error continues, you'll want to follow the "General troubleshooting" section below to make sure you meet requirements for Time Machine:

  • "Make sure your backup disk is plugged in, turned on, and securely connected to your Mac. If your backup disk is on a network, make sure both the disk and your Mac are connected to the network. If the network is experiencing problems, your backup disk may not be available.

  • If you upgraded to macOS Monterey, your existing backups are not upgraded. New backups that are created can be used only on macOS Big Sur or later."

If the error persists, you'll want to continue with the additional sections to help with Time Machine here: Time Machine troubleshooting on Mac

All the best.
