My old iMac, running Snow Leopard, has photos I want to back up. My external hard drive has a USB3 connecting cord. Can I use it in the USB 2 (or even USB1)port on my old iMac?

Generally, current USB cables are backward compatible ... work with earlier versions of USB. Try it and see, the worst that can happen is your can't connect to the drive.
