Sorting data

Has Apple added the feature yet to sort cells by background color? This seems like a really basic feature for a spreadsheet.

No.

Numbers does not sort "cells." Any sort of a Numbers Table sorts rows, based on the values (data) in one or more Columns of the tables

Background colour (or Fill Colour) is a "style" applied to the cell, not "data."

Tables in Numbers can be sorted on data, but can't be sorted on 'style'.

Colour Fill can be applied to cells using conditional highlighting rules which determine the colour to be applied depending on the value (number, text, duration, date & time) in the cell. Sorting by the contents of cells in that column will also sort the colours that are dependent on those values.

You can use the Provide Numbers Feedback menu item in the Numbers menu to make a Feature request directly to Apple for a 'sort by colour' feature to be added to Numbers.

Excel can do this (though not sure it is a "basic feature"; I've never found much use for it.)

But Numbers can't do this directly.

Just add a column with values corresponding to each color and sort by that column instead. Quick and easy.

If you have to do this often over a large range of cells then a short script can be a good solution for retrieving values for each color. Otherwise, it's probably easier to just do it manually.
