unable to pair iPhone 12 with mac

I would like to pair my phone with my mac but I receive a message saying "pairing is prohibited by a policy on the device". Can you explain or help?

Correct, this is expected behaviour.

There are many tasks that require Bluetooth to be turned on, but none require pairing in the traditional sense.

Exactly what are you hoping to accomplish?
