Upgrades are not present in the Mac App Store Updates panel on El Capitan. Only updates pertinent to El Capitan. You would need a mid-2012 MacBook Pro to meet the hardware requirements and obtain the full Catalina installer from the Mac App Store via the link provided by dialabrain.

Since Catalina does not support 32-bit applications, you want to preplan the upgrade by first running the free Go64 application to reveal your 32-bit applications and 64-bit applications with 32-bit dependencies that will not be supported on Catalina. Additionally, you want to verify that your printer/scanner vendor provides Catalina (10.15) driver support, as without, you have paperweights.

It is also wise to perform a last Time Machine backup before the upgrade and then set that drive aside, not allowing a Catalina Time Machine backup on it.
