How to retrieve old text messages

I need to find old text messages on my iphone from May 2019. I cannot retrieve them as the "save messages" button was not engaged at that time.

Any text message available to you is on your device. If you have old messages in a backup, and you do not use messages in iCloud, you can erase your current device and restore it using the backup.
