is there a way to update IOS from high sierra to Catalina on a mid 2010 mac book pro?

Unfortunately, macOS Catalina only supports MacBook Pro Mid 2012 or newer.

If you search YouTube there are several videos on how you might achieve the upgrade using alternate means. Pursing these options could come at the risk of damaging your machine, so be sure to back up your data before proceeding.
