Restore from time machine

i was running Monterey. Backed up my Hd then when I restored it with OS from backup which wanted to use Catalina?? How Monterey doesn’t appear. Should I restore with Catalina then upgrade multiple times to get back to Monterey?

How did you "backup" your drive? What app?


If you used Time Machine to restore, the backup dataset does not contain an OS ... just user data, user settings and apps.


If you completely replaced your OS, or are being offered to do so, you're not doing a simple restoration of data as would be the case with TM or any data only backup..
