Eg: how were you using your Mac just before it shut down ... was there an error message that may help troubleshoot? .

Wondering why you are unable to log-in to your Mac...

Am I right in assuming that you see the log-in screen ok after the shutdown ... and can enter your password ... ok

It is just that your Mac is not accepting the log-in password that has always worked ?

You could try starting up in Safe mode:

Or

You might want to try to reset your Mac Log-in Password:
