Can’t factory reset Macbook 2008

I have a MacBook 13” late 2008z

i need to wipe it and reinstall OS

its running El Capitan - I have tried shutting down; then starting up with CMD and R and it won’t go into restore mode.

also, Option on start up, and all that shows is the main Macintosh HD bit I presume some sort of OS partition should be showing as every time I try and select it it just boots up as normal?

any ideas?

Q - " i need to wipe it and reinstall OS "

A - What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac

The above is the official method and will achieve the same results even if the user is not selling, giving away etc.

Use Disk Utility to erase an Intel-based Mac

How to reinstall macOS

Follow these guidelines during installation:

  • If the installer asks to unlock your disk, enter the password you use to log in to your Mac.
  • If the installer doesn't see your disk, or it says that it can't install on your computer or volume, you might need to erase your disk first.
