I'm trying to download a copy of Monterey in order to format a boot disk. Every time I try to download the software it tries to install it and will not give me an installation copy. I’m already running Monterey and I just need a separate installation copy. How can I download it for installation onto a separate drive? I’m on Monterey v 12.3.1 using an iMac desktop 21.5” 2019 retina 4K model.
Any suggestions please?

Thanks for the tip, but Terminal said:
'Scanning for 12.3.1 installer
Install failed with error: update not found' -- followed by the computer name.
(I am connected to the internet, by the way. But that was the immediate response.)

Run this command in the Terminal. It will download the full installer into the Applications folder.
softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 12.3.1
