Disk1s5 and Update after macOS downgrade

Disk1s5

I recently downgraded to macOS Catalina since it's faster. But after the downgrade this disk called "disk1s5" showed up in disk utility.

If I try to mount it, this error shows up:

Update Disk

Also, there is another disk called "Update" It's mounted.

It also has files.

Anyone know why they are there and if I can remove them?

MacBook, macOS 10.15

I created a bootable device of Catalina, I booted from it, deleted "Macintosh HD" then downloaded it there. After the downgrade, the two disks showed up.

Using that same Bootable Installer of Catalina follow the below more correct way to Totally Remove Monterey

1 - Shutdown computer and disconnect all external drive Except the newly created Bootable Installer.

2- Restart and immediately hold the OPTION key until the Startup Manager appears and choose the USB Drive.

3 - It will present options >> Disk Utilities >> View >> View ALL attached Drives

4 - Choose the Upper Most Drive ( not the volumes indented and list below ).

5 - The drive normally is called Apple Media or Apple SSD - that is the drive to Erase and format as APFS with the GUID Partition Map.

6 - Once that is done >> backup out of Disk Utilities and choose install macOS.

7 - Follow the prompts and it may automatically reboot several time.

8 - Upon a final reboot - Setup Assist will present with the newer version of macOS.

yes it seems you can remove that disk1s5. You have all the vital elements present . Always a good idea to have a current backup before proceeding.

If you want to reclaim that 21.7 GB ...

You can add and delete Volumes within a Container at no penalty, ( i.e. all volumes shared space w/ the Container)

Can't I just remove the two disks?

Let's see the output from the Terminal.app copy and paste:

diskutil list internal

the disk numbering system is relative not absolute— therefore "disk1s5" is in question

on my system disk1s5 is the Virtual Memory Volume—you would not want to delete that.

APFS Volume ⁨VM⁩ 2.1 GB disk1s5
