I'm on Monterey 12.3.1 and I can not remove items from the dock. I drag it to the middle of the screen. A window appears that says REMOVE. Then what? If I release the mouse the item slips right back to the dock. It used to go "poof" when something was dragged from the dock. Any ideas?

That's the right method per: Use the Dock on Mac - Apple Support. If it doesn't work, try this: right or Control click on the item in the Dock > Options > Remove From Dock.

the only thing i can think of is, are the apps fully closed? if the app's window is closed but the app is still open, it will bounce back to the dock after you see "remove" above the app's icon and release the mouse.
