How do I restore Contacts from backup
iPhone 12 Pro Max
Actually the are part of the back up to ICloud. I logged into my ICloud account and used an older backup to get my contacts restored. Worked like a charm, but I would like to know how I lost them in the 1st place.....

No they aren't, you can read here What does iCloud back up? - Apple Support . And what you describe is syncing to icloud.

Contacts aren't part of the backup, since they are synced to whatever cloud or mail program you use.
