Thunderbolt display
Desktop icons all disappear, except SSD and TimeMachine, randomly.
Rebooting restores them.
Any ideas what is going on?

First, let's see if we can confirm if this issue happens in safe mode: Start up your Mac in safe mode.
If the issue persists after that, try creating a new user and see if the new user account runs into the same issue.

Thank you for the reply. The issue is random, and appears after putting in password during a sleep.
I doubt if starting in 'safe' mode will help, given that I cannot know when the problem will occur.
