How can I get my iPhone to display the name of the person calling or texting me?

I have switched from an android to an iphone. My contacts were transfered to my new phone however they are pretty messed up. How can I get my phone to display the name of the person calling or texting me? my phone doesn't seem to recognize the contacts

It seems like I need to enter a "main" number for everyone instead of just a "home" or "cell" number

That is incorrect. The name will display regardless of which of the phone numbers call … as long as you have your contacts housed in some reasonable place. Check Settings > Contacts > Accounts and be certain your contacts are housed in exactly one place and it’s a reasonable place.
